Drop in Pakistan's Imports Under Ban on Nonessentials

Following a ban on nonessential goods, Pakistan’s imports dropped over a third this July, according to Finance Minister Miftah Ismail. He said in a Sunday news conference that the improvement Pakistan's in trade situation will take the pressure off the rupee.

The country saw a decrease in imports in July, to $5 billion, which is more than 35% below June’s record high, $7.7 billion. Latest data for the month of July is about to be announced soon by the central bank and Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Saying “this is very welcome,” Ismail added that this follows the government’s attempt to ban imports of nonessential goods.

On Friday, the rupee traded up marginally at 239.37 to the dollar. Last week, the nonessentials import ban was removed, and only vehicles, mobile phones and household appliances are still prohibited.

According to Ismail, the present government has been determined to dramatically lower the Current Account Deficit (CAD) and see a surplus in one or two years. Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves are increasingly exhausted. The country has been challenged by a swelling current account deficit, with a $2.3 billion increase in June, which basically stemmed from a growth in oil imports.

The deficit for June 30 – the end of financial year – reached $17.4 billion compared to $2.8 billion a year earlier.

A staff-level agreement was reached with the IMF for $1.17 billion paid under a bailout package which has been resumed again.

China Still Sustains Clean Energy Despite Challenges

Energy officials, on Wednesday, said China will maintain green energy transition in spite of the struggles that world’s energy has faced following the Russia- Ukraine war.

China, which is the largest energy consumer in the world, has been attempting to find a balance between two things: its pledges to reach a maximum in emissions by the year 2030 and its necessity to maintain energy supplies. However, the country still aims to promote its fossil-free fuel energy by 1% per year by 2030, according to Zhang Jianhua, director of the National Energy Administration.

In a news conference held in Beijing, he said expansion of fossil-free fuel energy in China has persisted according to last year’s tight supply conditions and resumption of coal-fired power plants in European countries.

The world’s top greenhouse gas emitter attempts to cut coal consumption as of 2026. However, in March, President Xi Jinping stated that China “could not simply slam the brakes on consumption”.

Currently, China’s main utilities use record thermal coal, 170 million tons, and the government has promised not to cut power, versus last year’s widespread power failure.

Green, clean energy transformation in the world’s energy system is invariable in the long run and China will take advantage, said Li Chuangjun, director of the administration's renewable energy department.

Over the 6 months of 2022, the country exported 78.6 gigawatts (GW) of solar facilities and gained US$25.9 billion, over double the amount of a year earlier, he said.

Research earlier in 2022 suggested that 33 GW of new coal-fired power generation capacity was added in 2021, which is 3 times larger than the rest of the world combined.

EU’s Request to Slash Gas Demand

The European Union (EU) organized emergency plans for countries to reduce gas consumption by 15% until spring. The union’s command for a heavy drop in the fuel comes amidst Russia-Ukraine’s conflict.

The EU, according to the plan, aims to save up gas before winter to avoid any shock if Russia cut down the fuel supply in response to Europe’s endorsement of Ukraine.

Russia has already reduced gas supplies to several countries in Europe and EU officials believe that Russia might entirely put an end to gas deliveries.

On Wednesday, European commissioners invited all EU countries to decrease the fuel by 15% from August to March, versus the average use over the same period from 2016 to 2021.

This reduction would save Europe almost 45 billion cubic meters of the fuel within the months of August to March. Europe’s pre-war supply from Russia was 40%, accounting for about 155 billion cubic meters of natural gas (bcm) each year.

The voluntary target will get mandatory if there is an announcement by the EU over the serious gas shortage. Thereby, most EU countries have to accept the regulation. On that account, EU diplomats will address the issue this Friday.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a drop in gas flow from Russia could lead to stagnation in Europe’s economy.

Europe has to be prepared if there is a partial or total reduction of gas deliveries from Russia, stated Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission. This is while some European countries, including Poland and Hungary, have opposed to the emergency plan. It is necessary for the countries to consider a plan update by the end of September and declare what they will do to achieve the target.

European governments are recommended to take several actions to reduce gas consumption; accordingly, those industries that reduce their use of the fuel will be compensated through auctions. Also, it will be the same for public buildings that restrict heating and cooling temperatures.

They should determine the order based on which they would compel industries to shot down when there is a supply emergency. Households’ consumption would not be affected by the EU rules, however.

Russian Nord Stream 1 pipeline will resume gas supplies to Germany as of Thursday.

Essential Supplements to Postpone Aging

Research unveils that consumption of vitamins is attributed to slowing down aging.

Serums and creams, used topically, seemingly slow down aging process in the areas used; and are not able to work for the entire body. Vitamins, in contrast, work for overall health.

Although topical creams are helpful to fight aging in parts of the body, their combination with vitamins and supplements routines makes for a the most effective way to avoid aging.

Experts say that adults who fail to get sufficient vitamin D or B12 face aging disorder and poor health conditions.

Collagen is the first choice when it comes to anti-aging supplements. This protein helps to rejuvenate the skin and reduces formation of wrinkles sagging bags.

Vitamin A, also called retinol, is among the ingredients of anti-aging products.

To meet the body’s requirement for the vitamin, one has to rely on a vitamin-A rich nutrition or take its supplement version.

Vitamin D is another solution to fight aging. Studies by researches introduces the vitamin as an effective factor to put off aging and shield the skin against hazardous ultraviolet light (UV). The vitamin can be taken from the sun too.

Found in food products including almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, avocado, and asparagus, vitamin E maintains our general health condition and strengthens the immune system.

The existence of the vitamin not only helps to fight wrinkles and skin problems but it also helps enhances collagen production, which in turn revives cells and renews skin.

Carlsberg To Test Green Beer Bottles Across Europe

Carlsberg Group Brewing company is going to test its recyclable fiber beer bottles in Europe. Made of a wood-based fiber shell and plant-based polyethylene Furanoate (PEF) polymer liner, 8000 bottles will be taken as samples in countries such as France, the UK, and Poland. According to the Danish multinational brewer, these bottles, like glass bottles, maintain the same “taste and fizziness”. They are able to retain the cold beer for a longer time.

The newly-designed bottles are bio-based (excluding the cap). However, it is planned to offer the bottles with sustainable plastic cap next year.

It has been a big challenge to recognize and produce PEF as a container for beers, said Stéphane Munch, the Vice President Product Development at Carlsberg Group. He also said it will be a big achievement to attain good results after trials, work with suppliers and see bottles on the filling line.

The brewery company, he said, will continuously collaborate with its partners including Avantium, the innovative company in renewable chemistry and producer of PEF, as well as with Packaging and Containers Manufacturing Paboco, producer of outer shell of the bottle. They will help the company with developing beer packaging.

Since 2015, Carlsberg Group has been cooperating with its partners to design the bottles.

With the best beer in the global market, Carlsberg is trying to produce beer with barley malt grown by fully-organic and regenerative agricultural methods cooperating with Soufflet, the French agri-food group which supplies barley malt.
